The 2013 Class of Truman Scholars recently returned from Truman Scholars Leadership Week (TSLW) in Liberty, Missouri. The event, which ran from May 28 through June 2, served as a catalyst for bring the class of 2013 together as part of the Truman Community.
Sixty-two scholars, from 54 different colleges and universities, began the week getting acquainted with one another and with the Truman Foundation. On Wednesday, the group traveled to the greater Kansas City area to engage in service projects with a community food bank (Harvesters), a women's shelter (Rose Brooks), a health services center (KC Free Health), and a charitable thrift shop (Hillcrest Ministries). Scholars attended a graduate school fair on Thursday - where they met with and heard from representatives frorm the top graduate programs attended by Truman Scholars. By Friday, Scholars enjoyed discussions on how to select a graduate school program as well as how to navigate issues of identity during their public service career. Friday evening was also the scene of a much needed break in the form of a picnic and dance. On Saturday morning, Scholars presented a variety of policy implementation projects that they had been working on over the course of the week. These projects represented a variety of disciplines from public health to urban planning to international relations.
The Awards Weekend officially kicked off on Saturday with an evening barbeque and Thank You Ceremony. Parents, Foundation staff, select Faculty Representatives and event staff all attended the event to celebrate the 2013 class of Truman Scholars. Later that evening, the Scholars heard from Truman Scholar Ganesh Sitaraman (GA 2003), policy director for Elizabeth Warren and author of The Counterinsurgent's Constitution. On Sunday morning, the 2013 Truman Scholars were officially recognized at an Awards Ceremony at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library in Independence, Missouri.
