Westbrook Murphy
is an unabashed admirer of Harry Truman and of Truman Scholars. For him the Scholarship Foundation is a family enterprise. His father Charles S. Murphy served in the White House as President Truman’s Special Counsel, helped to organize the Scholarship Foundation, wrote the Truman Scholarship Act, and served as its first General Counsel.
Westbrook’s own public service includes two years as a trial attorney for Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, ten years at the U.S. Treasury Department, where his positions included General Counsel for the bureau that regulates national banks, and 30 years as the Truman Scholarship Foundation’s volunteer General Counsel.
A member of many bars, including the U.S. Supreme Court, he holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Duke and a law degree from Yale.
Westbrook's hobbies include sailing, New York Times crossword puzzles, challenging Truman Scholars with probing questions at TSLW policy presentations, and conversing with them either one-on-one or via social media. Westbrook and his wife Cindy are proud parents of three children and six grandchildren.
